The Calvin College Knights are proud to officially announce the commitment of Nick Hirst.

Nick has decided to further his hockey career and education with the Knights after a very successful 4-year run in Junior hockey.  He spent last season, his third with the Waterloo Siskins of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL), as team Captain and led the team in scoring from the blue line with 32 points in 47 regular season games.  Those point totals ranked him 19th in GOJHL scoring among defencemen.  He was named to the league All-Star team in the 2012-13 (SOJHL with the Ayr Centennials) and 2013-14 (GOJHL) seasons and also won the Cherrey Cup with the Siskins in 2013-14.

Following his minor midget season with the Waterloo Wolves AAA team, Hirst was drafted in the 8th round of the 2011 OHL Priority Draft by the Saginaw Spirit.  Overall, Nick tallied 137 points in 240 career games in Junior hockey.

Head Coach Mike Petrusma had this to say about Nick and his commitment to the Knights:

“Nick is a player that comes with high praise from his Junior club.  He is a hard hitting defenceman that I expect to improve our team immediately.  He has a calming presence on the puck and an excellent first pass.  Nick has a skill set that can contribute in each facet of the game and I’m really looking forward to getting him on the ice.  Our coaching staff has gotten to know Nick over the past few months and we believe that he will fit in very well off the ice as well.”

Why did Nick choose Calvin?

“I believe the biggest factors in helping me choose Calvin were the hockey program it has as well as the quality of education it will give me. Calvin really has a reputation like no other, and when I got to see it all first hand during my campus tour it was pretty much impossible to turn it down.”
